Brazilian-born Silvia Poloto is an accomplished artist working in a range of visual disciplines. Recognized for her dynamic compositions and color sensibility, Poloto exploits a vibrant visual palette of boldness and subtlety. Her artwork is characterized by equal amounts of surprise, playfulness and provocation.

Poloto has worked in a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, painting and printmaking. Elements of each of these media find their home in her current work. In describing this exhibition Poloto writes, “I tend to work in series and for this exhibition I have chosen to present work from several distinct yet undeniably connected bodies of work. My work tends towards an amalgam of materials and ideas with one thing in common. Saturated with my energy, the images are personal and visceral responses to life as I live it daily.”

While San Francisco is her current home, her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad, including United Arab Emirates, France, Spain, Jordan, Italy, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and China among others. In the Bay Area, her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Italian American Museum, the Triton Museum and the DeYoung Museum, where she was an artist-in-residence. Poloto’s work has been acquired by more than 90 institutional and corporate collections around the US.

Sweet Call and Response - new book from Steve MacDonald and Dana Smith

Steve MacDonald, who showed some excellent work in our January show, Days To Come, emailed over some images of his newest project, a limited edition book he produced with fellow artist Dana Smith. Here’s what he had to say about the project:

“Sweet Call and Response was developed with an emphasis on experimentation with the materials - digital printing on canvas, photo collage, machine sewn thread, and sewn collage.

Instinctively, messages are sent to attract a response. This book is a visual poem about communication through the interplay of universal symbols and photographic images.
The book is printed entirely on canvas specially coated for digital printing with pigmented inks. A variety of sewing techniques, such as patchwork and embroidery, are applied to the pages over the ink. Each page of the book is treated with meticulous stitching executed by hand using a home sewing machine. Pages are affected on both sides by the stitching. Inverse images create a visual echo woven into the design of the book, which propels the narrative ever forward.”

His parents, both scientists, moved the family often for jobs at different institutions. Leaving Poland when he was seven years old, his family would settle briefly in Montreal before moving to the United States when Maciej was nine. He would also live in Washington, DC; Pennsylvania; and Long Beach, CA.

He received his BFA in painting from Pennsylvania State University in 2008, and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2011. When asked about his transitions between painting and photography, he states, “I studied to be a painter. My dad and brother were both really into photography when I was a child. I didn’t start taking photos seriously until the end of undergrad, maybe 2006 or 2007.”

He reflects on his work in general, “We are living in dismal times. My work creates a record of the physical manifestation of hopelessness, apathy, alienation, desire, loss, loneliness, and melancholy created by the conditions of modern life. My work does not offer solutions to predicaments, but illustrates and exposes them. Even though this view of life is bleak, within my work, there are always various elements of irony and humor. The formal aspects are as important to me as the subject matter. Through the inherent quality of the medium, I convey these fragile emotional states.”

Shooting his images on expired film, he owns about 30 cameras, only four or five of which work, mostly gifts or picked up from the side of the street. These include four Polaroid cameras, an old Polish twin reflex, some Eastern European SLRs, and an array of point and shoots. He also has 16-millimeter, Super 8, and 8-millimeter motion cameras.

Influences include fellow photographers here in San Francisco, his friends, who often end up as his models, Terry Richardson, Harmony Korine, Dianne Arbus, Helmut Newton, and the never ending flood of images on Tumblr.

Someplace in Space Featured Photographer - Haris Mesic

Haris Mesic, while a transplant to the Bay Area, has definitely adopted some of what is considered San Francisco culture, from his long hair, ever-present skateboard, love of capoeira, and easy-going attitude. “San Francisco has been my home since ‘95. I could not see my self living in any other city in America. We are surrounded by a land whose beauty, bounty, and blessedness are only rivaled by the hearts of the people who inhabit it.”

Haris and his family moved to the Bay Area to escape the conflict in what was once Yugoslavia. The effects of the genocide Haris witnessed as a child are deeply engrained in his personal philosophy, a quest to find light in a world filled with darkness.

Haris returned to what is now Bosnia to document the areas around Sarajevo as they undergo transition. “Bosnia is in the process of joining the EU. Joining the EU has a lot of economical rules that came along with it… and as we’ve seen in the past, economic progress always leads to cultural destruction. This first half of the series is about capturing a small part of Bosnia, or at least what is left of Bosnia. Then, sometime in the future once things have changed more, I will go back and finish the series in an attempt to hold up a mirror to people as an examination of our obsession with capital and profit and what we are willing to give up for it. Yugoslavia was once a state of idealism…three very different faith-based cultures living together as one and a government that took care of its people, all devoured by greed. There is much examination needed of what happened and why.”

He discovered photography as an outlet while attending school at John O’Connell High School, which offered a program in which students could enroll in free classes at City College of San Francisco. He currently shoots his photos with a Voigtlander Bessa III bellows camera, preferring 120 film.

A self-taught photographer, VanMunching was a philosophy professor at UC Berkeley before starting his own photography studio.

On the subject of what has influenced him and shaped his work, he talks about what inspired his most recent project, a book:

“Like many photographers who prefer the results of a large view camera, I initially fell under the spell of Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, though I soon realized that nature was not the subject matter for me. Street photography, on the other hand, seemed just the antidote to my disenchantment with academia and its isolation from the world outside the ivory tower. But hauling a view camera around the city struck me as both wildly impractical and quite retrograde, since the best street photographers of the last 75 years have favored small cameras for their fluid ability to capture the fleeting and spontaneous.

“But around then, someone gave me a book of Atget’s early-twentieth-century studies of changing Paris, which opened my eyes to the possibilities of using a large camera to document buildings and streets, especially the rapid expansion of downtown San Francisco. In learning to operate an 8x10, I came to appreciate Richard Avedon’s portraiture even more, which sent me searching for his influences. Luckily, SF MOMA just happened to be hosting a retrospective of August Sander’s chronicling of German life from the 1920’s - ‘40’s. Sander’s uncanny ability to record something about his subject’s character inspired a second direction in my street photography.”

“From this, as well as my exposure to Max Yavno’s 1949 record of his year photographing San Francisco, I decided to work on a book about turn-of-the-21st-century San Francisco. Even if I couldn’t capture “the decisive moment” that is available to someone using a digital SLR, I was intent on discovering what the more formal results of very old photographic technology might be when applied to the depiction of a modern city.”
